Job Description: 

The Vice President Operations Manager will manage the day-to-day manufacturing, materials management and quality functions for this softwood sawmill in the south. Develop and implement programs to ensure that the plant operates safely and efficiently while sustaining consistent and optimum rates of production. This position will focus on applying knowledge and experience to a dynamic and fast-paced environment.  Responsibilities and goals are to improve the overall productivity of the company facilities as well as supervise strategic review, planning, as well as plant modifications and capital projects. The Vice President Operations Manager will quarterback all areas of manufacturing to produce products that are created safely, within quality standards/cost objectives and on-schedule. This is a “hands on” position for an experienced and dynamic candidate.


  • Ensuring the highest level of workplace safety and safety training

  • Fostering an effective working relationship as well as providing direction and support for supervisory and production personnel.

  • Direct and manage plant operations, production and personnel at privately owned facility.

  • Work with plant manager to:

    • Maximize plant labor.

    • Determine the labor required to meet current manufacturing and distribution activities in partnership with manager.

    • Oversee plant equipment maintenance manager, programs and spare part supply.

    • Assist plant manager with shift plans and maintenance schedules.

    • Vigorously enforce housekeeping and safety protocols.

  • Utilize operating data to reduce cost while maximizing plant productivity and achieve production targets.

  • Develop and deliver weekly/monthly reporting tools and packages to management as required.

  • Review, monitor and ensure quality of final product to meet expressed specifications.

  • Oversee the organizational supply chain functions that include purchasing, fiber procurement and inventory management.

  • Clear maintenance aptitude to ensure the consistent effectiveness and efficiency of the production equipment.

  • Ensure full compliance with applicable government regulations and company policies.

  • Demonstrate understanding of process balances and optimization. Including, conceptual design of equipment, process development reports, Block Flow Diagrams and Process Flow Diagrams, Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and basis of design process scope documents.

  • Assist Directors with preparation of capital requirements and operations expenses based on short and long-term corporate goals. Estimate the costs and capital requirements needed to meet forecasted production and distribution requirements.

  • Collaborate with the Directors and Human Resources in the development, administration and enforcement of company policies and procedures. Oversee that Operations personnel comply with ethics, safety, discrimination, harassment and other relevant policies.

  • This position manages the Plant Manager of the sawmill and is responsible for the management, performance and hiring of the employees within the plant.

  • This position requires travel as needed.


  • 5 years softwood SYP sawmill experience in manufacturing management/operations.

  • Knowledge and experience with business P&L and asset acquisitions.

  •  BA/BS degree in industrial, engineering or business administration or similarly related education preferred.

  • Oral and written skills with an emphasis on Microsoft Office applications; specifically: Word and Excel.

  • Solid social skills with an ability to communicate and work diplomatically with production employees, plant management and senior management.
